Abstract: In this talk we present a brief introduction about algorithms and parameterized complexity, one of the most promising areas of computer theory. We show some problems of our particular interest such as deletion of vertices in bounded treewidth graphs to obtain free structures of certain induced subgraphs. In particular we address the development of single-exponential time algorithms with respect to treewidth of the input graph for solving problems such as vertex deletion to obtain free graphs of independent induced sets of size k.

Short-Bio: Ignasi Sau obtained a joint Ph.D in 2009, in Mathematics from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (Catalonia) and in Computer Science from Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolis (France). In 2009/2010 he did a postdoc in the Technion (Israel), and since 2010 he holds a Junior Researcher CNRS position at LIRMM in Montpellier(France). In 2016/2017 he spent one year as a Visiting Professor in Universidade Federal do Ceará (Brazil), and he got his “Habilitation à diriger des recherches” from Université de Montpellier in 2018. His research interests are within graph theory and computational complexity, mainly in parameterized complexity. Besides participating regularly in French ANR projects, he has been the coordinator of bilateral international projects with Turkey and Japan, PC member of several international conferences such as SIROCCO, WG or MFCS, and co-organizer and co-chair of WG 2019. He has published 56 papers in international journals, and a similar record in international conferences. He has supervised a number of Ph.D. and master students, among which 3 Brazilian students who did an internship in Montpellier. He visits and teaches regularly in Brazil, resulting in active and fruitful collaborations with several Brazilian universities such as UFC (Fortaleza), UFMG (Belo Horizonte), UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro) and UFF (Niterói), which have yield more than 10 joint publications.
